Thursday, the 13th of February, was the first day of our snowstorm two-day extravaganza snowstorm of the century (the second day being the 16th in total; we got 72 cm of snow!!) and I planned to photowalk the heck out of it in the Mont-Royal Avenue neighbourhood. It was snowing heavily, but it was fairly controlled as there was not really any wind. I protected my camera, but I’m not paranoid about it. My experience is that as long as I shield it with either my arm or my jacket, it will be fine. This was taken in the leg of my walk; I was very much playing with the shutter timing at that point. Zone focusing with the Summicron 35mm to help with my picture-taking speed. Of course, the slow shutter makes the pinpoint focus less of a critical issue here. Yet I think that it’s okay here.
In post, my first instinct is to go monochrome. I cropped the image mostly to dismiss that little dark thing (my strap??) on the left, which happens sometimes with rangefinder cameras (because you don’t see through the lens). I added a bit of texture and structure to help define the subject a bit more. It gives off less of the snowy atmosphere of the storm, but I figured the blued motion compensated for that. //
Jeudi, le 13 février, était le premier jour de nos deux jours de tempête de neige du siècle (le deuxième jour étant le 16 au total; nous avons eu 72 cm de neige !!) et j'avais prévu de faire une promenade photo dans le quartier de l'avenue Mont-Royal. Il neigeait fortement, mais c'était assez contrôlé car il n'y avait pas vraiment de vent. J'ai protégé mon appareil photo, mais je ne suis pas paranoïaque à ce sujet. Mon expérience est que tant que je le protège avec soit mon bras ou ma manteau, ça ira. Cette image a été prise dans le dernier mille de ma marche; je jouais beaucoup avec le timing de l'obturateur à ce moment-là. Mise au point par zone avec le Summicron 35mm pour aider à la rapidité de ma prise de vue. Bien sûr, l'obturateur lent rend la mise au point précise moins critique ici. J’ose dire, je pense que c'est bien comme ça ici.
En post-production, mon premier instinct est de passer au monochrome. J'ai recadré l'image principalement pour éliminer cette petite chose sombre (ma sangle ??) sur la gauche, ce qui arrive parfois avec les appareils photo télémétriques (car vous ne voyez pas à travers l'objectif). J'ai ajouté un peu de texture et de structure pour aider à définir un peu plus le sujet. Cela rend moins bien l'atmosphère enneigée de la tempête, mais j'ai pensé que le mouvement bleuté compensait cela.
