Abstract

When the light is average in the cold depth of winter, it’s tough to walk around in my old familiar hunting ground and find something new, so instead I try to find a new way to photograph old familiar things. Using the camera’s tools like here: the shutter speed and a neutral density filter, giving the possibility of the abstract. So this is the Plaza Saint-Hubert in Rosemont-Petite Patrie. //

Quand la lumière est médiocre au cœur de l'hiver froid, il est difficile de se promener dans mon voisinage familier et de trouver quelque chose de nouveau à photographier. Ainsi, j'essaie de trouver une nouvelle façon de photographier des choses familières et communes. J'utilise les outils de l'appareil photo comme ici : la vitesse d'obturation et un filtre à densité neutre, offrant la possibilité de l'abstrait. Ainsi, voici la Plaza Saint-Hubert dans Rosemont-Petite Patrie.

The workflow

I love late autumn light and on this photo I was going for a look that’s punchier, slightly warmer with the face of the lady on the left lighter and the picture in the back of her opened up to underline the difference between past and present Montreal. All this is tightly cropped, more focused on the people rather than the sign or the cars. //

J’adore la lumière de fin d’automne et sur cette photo je recherchais un look plus percutant, légèrement plus chaud avec le visage de la dame à gauche éclairci et l'image derrière elle ouverte pour souligner la différence entre le Montréal du passé et du présent. Tout cela est serré, plus axé sur les gens plutôt que sur le panneau annoncé ou les voitures.

The workflow

While on my way back home, I was in the last wagon of the metro. I always make a habit of not looking at my phone, only to notice that everyone else did. With Lightroom Classic, I kept the picture simple and in colour (I tried a black-and-white version, but I thought the colour one was giving me better demarcation of each individual). Of course, I white-balanced the green light of the wagon (can I say that I preferred the old wagon who had more «character»). I cropped the image 8x10, tightening it without losing anything, punched up the colours a bit, gave it some structure and details to make sure the viewer knew what he was looking at. //

Pendant que j'étais dans le dernier wagon du métro, j'ai pris l'habitude de ne pas regarder mon téléphone, remarquant que tout le monde autour de moi le faisait. Avec LightroomClassic, je l'ai gardé simple et en couleur (j'ai essayé l'option noir et blanc, mais je pensais que la version couleur donnait une meilleure démarcation de chaque personne). Bien sûr, j'ai équilibré la lumière verte du wagon (les nouveaux wagons de metro n’auront pas le caractère des anciens à mon avis) . Recadré en 8x10, resserrant l'image sans rien perdre, un petit punch de couleur, la structure pour intensifier les détails et les individus.
